On the top of the mountain Avala is located the monument dedicated to an Unknown Hero which was built in 1938. This monument is a sign of gratitude to many unknown soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the trenches of the bloodiest of all wars.

The building was modeled after Greek Temples in fashion of neo-Classicism and the tomb is surrounded by caryatides carrying a roof. Eight sculptures are representing the mothers of the soldiers as well nations and regions of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia as follows: mother from Šumadija, mother from Panonija-Vojvodina, mother from Monte Negro, mother from Kosovo, mother from Dalmatia, mother from Zagorje, mother from Slovenia and mother from Macedonia.
