Other information
Each year, in mid October, town Kikinda on three days becomes the centre of Europe due to a vegetable - ludaja.
On the first day are organized various lectures about breeding of pumpkins and concerts of ethno and classical music.... The central celebration is organized on Saturday. In early morning, in "Narvik" hotel, starts the competition of restaurant owners in preparation of various dishes using ludaja as the main ingredient. It is followed by competition in preparation of "Banatski fruštuk".
"Banatski fruštuk" is competition among women in preparation of traditional breakfast. For youngest residents are organized "Games with ludaja". Relay race with a pumpkin in a hand, competition in fast eating of pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pie, are reserved for pupils in elementary school, as well as preparation of masks.
What follows is creation of pumpkin masks and masked ball when youngest residents of Kikinda take part in carnival procession together with the guests, wearing clothes made of cornstalks, hemp sacks and autumn fruits accompanied by songs and recitals.
The final part occurs when the jury elects the biggest and the heaviest pumpkin. So far, the champion in length was a pumpkin of 213 cm, and the heaviest pumpkin measured in Kikinda so far had 247 kg. Ceremonial proclamation of a winner is held on Sunday.
