The town was founded in 1694, and from the only beginning it was the capital of culture, called “Serbian Athens”. Archeological remains on the territory of Petrovaradin (central Part of Novi Sad) indicate the existence of human settlements back in the Paleolithic Age. By the end of the 17th century Serbs were not allowed to live at Petrovaradin. Therefore, they settled at the left bank of the Danube and founded the town Račak (or Petrovaradin Trench). In the 18th and in the 19th century Novi Sad was the biggest Serbian city. In 1864 Matica Srpska (the oldest cultural- scientific institution of Serbia) was moved to Novi Sad, a high school was built, and the Serbian National Theatre was founded.

During the 19th and the 20th century, many great figures of Serbian literature and other important people lived and gathered in Novi Sad. Among them were: Vuk Karadžić (author, ethnologist and language reformer), Đuro Daničić (scientist), Đura Jakšić (poet and painter), Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (doctor and poet), Svetozar Miletić (socialist and author), Laza Kostić (poet), Đorđe Natošević (author and director of the first high school) and Kosta Trifković (playwright).
