The National park Šar Planina (Šar Mountain) is situated near the Macedonian border and extends over a length of 85 km. When it comes to wildlife, it is considered one of the richest regions of Europe.

 

The most attractive peak of the mountain is Ljuboten (2498 m). Having in mind that 45% of Serbian plant life in Serbia grows on Šar Planina, the mountain is rightly named “Wildlife refuge”. Cultural and historical heritage of the National Park Šar Planina is very rich and it is of great importance for the Serbian identity and history.

 

 

Šar Planina is home to 147 different species of butterflies, the most in Europe. It is considered the cradle of Serbian spirituality, statehood and history, because there are 45 churches and monasteries in this area.
