Subotica

Short info - Subotica

Subotica is the most northern city of the Republic of Serbia, it has a surface of 290km2 and a population of about 100,000, which makes it the city with the second highest population in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The town is just 1 km away from the Serbian border with Hungary, so that its first name, from 1391, was Hungarian. It was Zabatka, which is one of the varieties of the contemporary Hungarian name for it (Szabadka). Serbian name Subotica was first mentioned in 1653, and it comes from the word “Subota” (Saturday), in diminutive (Small Saturday).

 

The city is situated in Pannonian Plain, and it has a long tradition and a rich cultural inheritance. Due to its position, and very qualified population, it became the most important administrative, industrial, traffic and cultural center of the North Bačka District. Together with Palić Lake, which is only 7km away, it also is a center of tourism and recreation.

 

Near the town there is access to highway E-75, which connects Subotica with Hungary in the north, and with South Europe in the South, over Belgrade. By the railway traffic Subotica is connected with the whole Europe.
