Stefan Nemanja founded this monastery in gratitude to St. George who pulled him out of prison. This is one of the oldest Serbian monasteries whose construction was completed in 1171. This monastery is 839 years old, 300 of those years was in ruins, and 40 years is being reconstructed..

Church of St. George consists of two towers or pillars on which the church got its name. From the original frescoes in the monastery only few are left standing, and part of the frescoes and decorations after World War II was took of the walls and now is kept at the National Museum in Belgrade.

The columns were built in the characteristic style of the time, with the synthesis of two architectural concepts of the middle Ages: Byzantine architecture in the East, and Romanesque architecture in the West. From the original paintings only few traces remain.

Monastery, together with the complex of Old Ras and monastery Sopocani, was included on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
