Vranje

Short info - Vranje

Vranje is situated at the south of Serbia, in the Vranje Valley, on the banks of the river Vranjska reka, and it is administrative center of the Pčinja District. It has a surface of 860km2, and a population of more than 88,000.

This town was first mentioned in 1093, and a part of a Serbian state it became in 1207. First written document about Vranje (11th century) comes from Ana Komnenos, Byzantine Princess, who was writing about the rule of her father, the emperor Alxios I Komnenos. In the period of Turkish rule, Vranje was the crossroad between Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria, and it was known for its production of arms, metal ware and hemp. After the WWII, Vranje become an industrial center, with shoe, textile and metallurgical factories.

The heart of the city has fully retained the image of the old Balkan town, and the upper, older parts of the city even retained their look from the Turkish period: narrow alleys, densely packed houses. The city is known for its neighborhoods, so called mahalas (quarters).
