Short info - Apatin

Apatin, one of the most beautiful towns in Vojvodina, is located in its northwestern part, West Bačka, on the left bank of Danube, and it occupies the space of 350 km2. This urban area and four rural municipalities: Kupusina, Prigrevica, Svilojevo and Sonta, have a population of  about 40,000. Danube-Tisa-Danube channel is only 3km away from this municipality.

The first mentioning of Apatin in a written document is in 1011. In 1417, this town is mentioned as property of Stefan Lazarević, and in 1541 it fell to the Turks, and was occupied by them for 140 years. In1760. Apatin was officially proclaimed a town and a constant trade centre, and in 1764 one of the biggest textile workshops in Bačka was built in it. In 18th and in the first half of 19th century Apatin was experiencing great economic growth, due to trade, craft, shipbuilding, and banks, saving banks and brickyards were getting opened. ..

Apatinski Rit (Apatin swamp), situated at 3500ha of land, is even nowadays largely in the flood zone, and because of that it is still one of the few territories with unchanged hydrological conditions . On this territory, the last big fragments of natural swamp forests are preserved, with willow, poplar and oak trees, river forks and ponds…This swamp, together with Kopački Rit, is a very important ecological unit, important for survival of many species, mostly birds, localized in wetlands: black stork, white-tailed eagle and different kinds of heron.

Apatin is well known as a fishing centre, and its fields, forests and swamps are ideal for cycling too. In this area, there are several beautiful beaches at the banks of Danube, suitable for swimming and for water sports.
