Banja Koviljača

Short info - Banja Koviljača

One of the most beautiful and healthiest curative spas on the Balkans is situated in western Serbia, in the embrace of the river Drina and the forested mountain Gučevo, 128 m above sea level. It is surrounded by the vast plains of Mačva and Semberija and the mountains Boranja, Sokolske planine and Cer. The resort has rich springs of sulphuric water, therapeutic mud, favourable climatic conditions and numerous cultural and historical monuments. You can reach Banja Koviljača by road (highway Belgrade-Ruma and then regional road Ruma-Šabac-Loznica-Banja Koviljača, a total of 145 km.

Archaeological remains show that the area of Banja Koviljača was already inhabited in Roman times. It was called Genzis then. In the Middle Ages it gained the status of a healing location, visited especially because of its healing waters. The old fortress Koviljkin Grad, one of the best known cultural and historic monuments, rises near the spa town. The healing water is rich in sulphur, and this is the reason why the place where it springs got the name Smrdan (Stinking place). Thanks to sulphur in the water coming from the spring, it was easy to notice its specific characteristics. Thus, passersby could spontaneously experience the healing effects of Smrdljiva Bara. According to oral traditions, they left their worn out horse there and, upon return, found it completely cured.

Banja Koviljača has 6,340 inhabitants and it is situated 128 m above sea level.

The resort has a modern equipped Special Rehabilitation Hospital, with excellent medics. Main health advantages are sulphur-rich water springs and therapeutic mud.

Among the visitors of Banja Koviljača are Vuk Karadžić, Dositej Obradović and King Aleksandar Karađorđević. The King Petar I Karađorđević officially opened the sulphuric bath in 1908.

Banja Koviljača is perfect for people who suffer from rheumatism, osteoporosis, degenerative muscle diseases, back problems, joint damage and damage to peripheral nervous system. It is also suitable for rehabilitation after injuries, gynaecological diseases, sterility and skin diseases.
