Banja Koviljača

Excursions

Hospital King Petra I Karađorđevića - Foto: Tomislav Zivanovic

Excursions around Banja Koviljača are, besides health and rehabilitation programs in the Special Rehabilitation Hospital, the main attraction of the town. Above Banja Koviljača rises the beautiful, densely wooded, mountain Gučevo. Its highest peak is Crni Vrh, 779 m above the sea level. On the top of the mountain there is Spomen-kosturnica, a mausoleum which was built in 1914. From the top of the mountain one can enjoy a fantastic view over the landscape, through which the river Drina meanders.

About 9 km from Loznica lies Tršić, the birth place of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić. The village has an ethnographic park through which the river Žeravija passes. About 4 km from Tršić lies the well-known monastery Tronoša, which was built in 1317. It is an endowment of Queen Katarina, the second wife of King Dragutin. This is the monastery where Vuk Karadžić went to school as a child. Within the monastery compound is a church, which was renovated in 1559. Tronoša is also known for the Tronoša’s annals, the document written by the monk Josif in 1781, which are kept in Vienna, while there is only a copy of it kept in the monastery.

Not far away, there is Soko grad, where the last Turkish fortification is situated, It was built in the 15th century. There, between Ljubovija, Krupanj and Mali Zvornik, is the Monastery of St. Nicholas (Manastir Sv. Nikola), built in 2000. The monastery is surrounded by an extraordinary beautiful and unspoiled nature, with lush vegetation and waterfalls.

Below the mountain Cer and the hill Starac, there is the monastery Čokešina, known as a religious institution, but also as an educational centre for young men from the surrounding areas. During various wars it was destroyed a couple of times, but it was built up again with the help of the people. The monastery is famous for the battle against Turks on April 16, in which the brothers Nedić and 300 more soldiers died. This battle is the Serbian counterpart of the Battle of Thermopylae.
