The Golubac Fortress
Other information
The Golubac Fortress was mentioned for the first time in 1335 as a Hungarian military fortification, although the exact year of its erection is unknown, or who had erected it.
The fortress was built in the period when side arms were used, on a high rock at the very entrance into the Đerdap gorge, where was the best overview of the whole surrounding. It was built with a plan, on a very important geo-strategic area.
Due to its highly favorable geostrategic position, it represented a goal for many invaders and a battlefield of several clashes for many centuries. In has been in Serbian hands since 1876 when the Turks handed it over to price Mihajlo.
Since 1948, Golubac town has been under the protection of Institute for protection of cultural monuments, and by categorization of fixed cultural goods, in 1979 it was declared a cultural monument of extreme importance and is now situated on the territory of National park Đerdap.
