The Petrovaradin Fortress is one of the largest and most preserved fortresses from 18th century. The archeological remains at Petrovaradin territory show that there were human settlements even at the Paleolithic time. At the end of 17th century, the Serbs could not live in Petrovaradin. So they settled at the left bank of the river Danube and founded Racka town (or Petrovaradin trench).

The fortress was erected thanks to the Italian duke Aloisio Ferdinando Luigi Marsilli (1659-1730) from Bologna. The main buildings were constructed in the upper part of the fortress: the Long barrack, the Simple barrack, Topovnjača (Arsenal, later called Mamula) and a tower with a big clock. This tower is specific because the minute hand of the clock shows hours and the hour hand shows minutes. From 1768 to 1776, the fortress was built in the underground – passages, galleries and halls in four levels.

There is also a second planetarium in Serbia, opened in 2001, and situated in so-called Parade square. The Petrovaradin Fortress today is a cultural and historical monument of first class importance and a unique tourist attraction.

Today, there are hotels, coffee shops and restaurants. The biggest music festival in this part of the Europe – EXIT is held there. Beside Exit, other events are being organized throughout the year, such as: Baby EXIT, the Cultural time machine, the Tunnels of light, the Vine labyrinth and the Museum night.
