The Niš Fortress – a military fortification from Turkish era, from 17th century. It is situated in the centre of Niš, at the right bank of the Nišava river. It is a Turkish fortress built on the remains of antique and medieval fortification. It represents one of the largest and most often visited fortresses in Serbia.

It was many times damaged and constructed by Romans, Byzantines, Slovenes, Bulgarians and Serbs. It final look dates from 1723, when the Turks renovated it at the end of their reign at this region. Over 40 stonemasons from Constantinople and around 400 builders from Niš and surroundings were engaged for the construction of the Niš Fortress.
Today, there is a summer stage for various events in the fortress: the Movie festival, Choir festivities, “Nišville” – jazz festival and other.
