The Prizren town or Kaljaja, the Byzantium fortress, is situated above the town and was constructed in 11th century. It was reinforced and built up during emperor Dušan reign. For a while, it was a capital of the Serbian empire. It consists of the Big town and High town, and a separate unit is the eastern part, originating from medieval time.

A place Potkaljaja was built at the foot of the fortification. Today, there are only remains of the fortress, but its monumentality can still be seen.
