Pirot or the Momčilo’s town is a town fortification beside the Nišava river in Pirot. It was erected during the reign of prince Lazar. The Turks managed to occupy it, but in 1386 it was recovered by duke Dimitrije, which was one of the reasons for starting the Kosovo battle 3 years later. Until the first half of 20th century, the fortification was in military use.

It is mostly well preserved nowadays. In the period from 1970 to 1986, archeological investigations were conducted, along with restaurateur and conservation works, performed by regional Institute for cultural monument protection from Niš and the museum of Ponišavlje from Pirot.

The Serbian medieval fortification was relatively small. It consisted of citadel guarded by pre-fortification. Later, a weaker wall with loop-holes was added toward the river. Some parts of the movie “Battle at Kosovo” were filmed there.
