Kopaonik is very popular for its walking tours through the National park, to destinations like Metođe, Kadijevac and Đorov most, as well as for its monastery tours, including the monasteries Sopoćani, Đurđevi stupovi, Žiča and Gradac. Also popular are excursions to Župa Aleksandrovačka, known for its wine and brandy, as well as to spa-towns Vrnjačka Banja and Mataruška Banja. Among the most popular attractions of Kopaonik is Ibar river rafting, paragliding, mountaineering and riding. Kopaonik has a very rich historical heritage – this area was an important mining centre in the Middle Ages, and besides old churches and monasteries, there are medieval fortresses and fortresses from earlier times. The nearest are the medieval castle Maglič and the Studenica monastery.

Metođe: The nature reserve Metođe lies on the right side of the Brzećka reka river valley. It covers an area of 110.58 ha. On its territory, there is the Shrine of Metođe, a sacral building with a 600 m long access path, as well as a cold water geyser, with a 5-6 m high water jet. In this reserve, there are various rare and relict plant species. Spruce and fir forests cover an area of 1800 m, and beech trees are up to 40 m high. Bird fauna representatives are the peregrine falcon, golden eagle, wren, small flycatcher, mountain swallow, mountain redstart etc.

The Monastery Žiča: Žiča iz a Serbian Orthodox monastery in the vicinity of Kraljevo (6 km). Together with the Church of the Holy Dormition (Crkva Svetog Uspenja), the monastery was built by the first king of Serbia, Stefan the First-Crowned. It was demolished in the 13th century, but King Stefan Milutin rebuilt it at the beginning of the 14th century. Unlike most monasteries in Serbia, which were built in rather inaccessible areas, Žiča is situated in a fertile plane. The endowment of King Stefan the First-Crowned (1195-1223) is one of the holiest places of the Serbian people. The construction of the main monastery church began around 1206, and it was finished before 1217, when its founder received the royal crown from Rome. In this church, the first Serbian archbishop Sava crowned his older brother, who became the first Serbian King (1217), and consecrated bishops of the newly founded eparchies. In Žiča, another two Serbian kings from the Nemanjić Dynasty (1169-1371) were crowned: Stefan’s sons, Radoslav and Vladislav. According to the old legend of seven-doored Žiča, there were seven kings crowned there. During the coronation, a new door opened. Only the crowned king could go through this door and after that it was walled up again. The Church of Holy Salvation (Crkva Svetog Spasa) and the small Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (Crkva sv. Petra i Pavla) are the only preserved buildings within the monastery compound. All other houses were built later.

Maglič: The medieval city Maglič is situated on the right bank of Ibar, some 16 km south of Kraljevo. It lies on a narrow plateau of a rocky reef. Maglič is among the most beautiful monuments of Serbian medieval military architecture. Between 1324 and 1337, the archbishop Danilo II renovated the walls, the Church of St. George (Crkva Sv. Đorđa) and a palace, which’s remains are preserved until today. Danilo II, known for writing biographies of famous Serbian medieval rulers, founded a monastic school in Maglič. On the top of the wall, there were fenced walking paths. The single-nave Church of St. George was decorated with elements of the gothic style. Maglič was an important stronghold for the protection of the monasteries Žiča and Studenica. After it came under the Turkish authority, it became the seat of the Maglič District. The city played a significant role during the Battle of Vienna and in the Second Serbian Uprising.

Ras: The medieval town Ras lies 11 km to the west of Novi Pazar. It has three archaeological sites: Fortification Gradina, Cave with the Monastery of St. Archangel Michael and the urban structure settlement Pazarište (Trgovište). During the first half of the 12th century, Ras became the main stronghold of the Serbian state and since then the fort was gradually strengthened. New buildings were built, the west gate was bricked up and a new one, beside the main tower, was opened instead. The Cave monastery with a church is linked to the name of the Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja. The well-known Vukan’s Gospel (Vukanovo jevanđelje) is believed to be written there and the remains of frescoes and carved inscriptions show that the monastery existed for a long time. The remains of the church, necropolis and other buildings suggest that it is possible that already in the 12th century an important spiritual centre was situated there, which survived even the Ottoman rule.
