St. Nicholas church - foto: D.Bosnic

In Kuršumlija there are churches of St. Nicholas and the church of the Virgin Mary. The church of St. Nicholas is the oldest foundation of Stefan Nemanja, which he built in the period between 1159 and 1166. The church has Byzantine and Romanesque style, which represents the announcement of Racian architecture style. The church is renovated, and the monastery complex is under state protection since 1979.

The church of the Virgin Mary is also the foundation of Stefan Nemanja, which was built at the same time as the church of St. Nicholas. This building is single-naved church with the foundation in the shape of trefoil and with the stone iconostasis today which is ruined, and it was put under state protection in 1979.

Kuršumlija is known for its natural phenomenon - Đavolja varoš (Devil’s Town). Đavolja varoš is known for its towers made of rocks on which tops there are rock “caps”, i.e. blocks. These rock columns were created by strong erosion of the soil that consists of mealy but hard material. There are 202 rock figures from two to fifthteen meters high, and from a half to three meters wide. This phenomenon is unique in Serbia and very rare in the world. There is a legend of this locality which tells that these rock columns represents stone wedding cursed because they wished to marry a brother and a sister. They are telling that no sin will not pass unpunished. Đavolja varoš was put under state protection in 1959, and in 1995 it was declared a nature reserve of great importance and put in the first category of protection.

Besides these towers there are two mineral water springs which are rare in the world and which are used for spa treatments. One spring is Đavolja voda (Devil’s water), it is cold and highly mineral water, and the second is Crveno vrelo (Red fount).

Having in mind that Nemanjić family had started Serbian spirituality on this terriotry by building churches it is normal that in almost every settlement in Kosanice and Gornje Toplice district there were or still are shrines. This district was named Kosanička Sveta Gora or Kosanički Athos by the experts in medieval age, because there are so many shrines as much as on Sveta Gora (Mount Athos).
