Short info - Peć

Peć is a city and a municipality in the northwestern part of Metohija district. It has a surface of 602 km, and a population of 170,000.


Peć was first mentioned in 1202, and it is believed that the town was founded by Illyrians. In the Roman period it was called Pesicium, and in his writings Ptolemy calls it Siparantum. Byzantine historian Procopius calls it Pentza in one of his works, in the 12th century the name Ždrelnik appears, and in the13th century name Peć.


In its history this town was the seat of the Serbian Orthodox church, organized as an archdiocese, and later as Patriarchate, since 1346, when the Emperor Dušan proclaimed Serbian empire. The city was ruled by the Arch bishop, it enjoyed many privileges and received gifts, so that its architecture and decorations were rich and varied.
