Short info - Pirot

The area of the municipality of Pirot is surrounded by Stara planina (Old Mountain) in the North and Northeast. The highest peak is Midžor, 2,170 m above sea level. The south and southwest border of the Pirot basin make the slopes of Vlaška Mountain (Vlaške planine) and Suva Mountain (Suva planina), while the northwest of the basin is surrounded by the slopes of the Svrljig Mountain (Svrljiška planina).

Once, an old Roman road passed through this area, known as Via Militaris (Military road). Later it was named Carigrad road.

During the rule of the Roman Empire, in the 3rd and 4th century, it was called Turres (Tower). Later it was known as Pirgos, Thurib, Momčilov grad (Momčilo’s City), Kale and Tvrđava (Fortress). Archaeological findings in the middle part of Pirotski Grad (city fortress) show that even 5,000 ago there was a settlement there. During further old town excavations, remains from the Eneolithic and Iron Age, as well as from antiquity, Early Byzantine Period and Middle Age were discovered

Today, the city of Pirot plays the same important role as in the past, and the municipality itself, with its 67,552 inhabitants, is one of the largest municipalities in Serbia. The city of Pirot is the seat of the Pirot District, consisting of four municipalities.
