A special nature reserve Obedska Bara is a world known wetland area. Through its long history it was a sanctuary for wildlife, but also for many researchers, scientists and nature lovers. It is located in Pećinci municipality, 45 km away from Belgrade.



Area of the reserve has a horseshoe shape, it was formed thousands of years ago, and since then much has changed, but its natural and other values are preserved to this day. This swamp, as a rest of a wetland environment with all the biological and bio geographical characteristics, is a unique phenomenon in Europe. Obedska Bara is under protection as a strict nature reserve.


Based on the Ramsar Convention, this area is on the list of wetlands of international importance, as well as on the list of areas of great importance for Birds of Europe. It is characterized by an extraordinary wealth of biodiversity, with presence of rare and threatened species of national and international importance. It contains numerous sensitive ecosystems, specially wetlands, and acient oak forests of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur).


The total proven wealth of wildlife in Obedska bara consists of 220 species of birds, 50 species of mammals, 16 species of fish, over 1200 species of insects, over 200 species of zooplankton, about 180 species of fungi, 500 species of plants, and 50 species of moss. Every year in August in Obedska bara is organized International Research-Work camp, in which participate young people from almost all continents.
