Nine miles south of Pristina stands the monastery of Gracanica. Erected in 1321 as an endowment of King Milutin. The frescoes at Gracanica were painted by Greek artists from Thessaloniki, the famous Mihailo and Evtihije. The painting was finished in 1321.

The frescoes belong to the narrative painting, characteristic of the Serbian and Byzantine art of the first half of the 14th century and are well preserved. Compositions are smaller and motives are more diverse, including scenes from the lives of the saints and the Church's calendar.

Gracanica is one of the most beautiful medieval Serbian monasteries. Portraits of King Milan and his wife Simonida are located at the entrance of the church.
