Užice
Short info - Užice
Užice is a town and municipality in Zlatibor district. It lies on the banks of the river Đetinja and it was already important as a medieval town, the remains of which are preserved. In 1941 the partisan army headquarters were in this town. In 1946 its name was changed in Titovo Užice, in honor of Josip Broz Tito, and in 1992 the old name was restored. Užice is a center of metal and machinery industries and of fruit growing.

This area was already inhabited in prehistory, which is proved by findings from Neolithic, discovered at many archeological sites (Megara cave in the south part of the village Stapari, Potpećka cave, in the village Potpeć.) By the end of 12th century Užice and surroundings became the part of the medieval feudal Serbian state, ruled by Nemanjić Dynasty.
Užice is first mentioned in a document from the archives of Dubrovnik, written on 9th of October 1329, and that date is declared The Day of Town.
During the 17th century Užice became an important center of crafts and culture. In 1862 the town was liberated from Turks. After adoption of a construction master plan in 1871 its intensive construction began. The town was economically empowered, crafts and trade flowered, guilds were established.
After the end of Balkan Wars and of the WWI, industry and production in Užice were rapidly renewed. The railroad network was developed: line Užice-Vardište was built, as well as roads Užice-Kraljeve Vode and Užice-Kadinjača -Bajina Bašta.
During the WWII Užice was the center of significant historical events.
After the WWII the city was slowly developing into a big economic and cultural center of western Serbia.

The town has primary, secondary and higher schools, Faculty of education, National Theatre, National Museum, City Archives, City Gallery and the National Library.
