Short info - Zaječar

Zaječar is a Town in Timočka Krajna region, which includes Zaječar Valley, Knjaževac Valley and part of Negoinska Krajina. It has a surface of 1,069km2 and a population of 40,000. It is a geographical, administrative, economical, political and cultural center of Zaječar District.

The town was first mentioned in 1466, in a Turkish charter about population of Vidin pashadom. The collapse of the First Serbian Uprising brought grave consequences to this region, and in 1833 the region was liberated and annexed to Serbia. It is assumed that the name is of Turkish origin and that it came from certain Asir Said Pasha, who put his army in the valley of The Timok.

The seat of the Timok Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church is located in this city. The diocese covers the whole territory of Zaječar and Bor districts, and is headed by His Grace Bishop of Timok Diocese Mr. Justin.
